Dresscode
Ethnographic Museum, St. Gallen
3 September 2006–7 January 2007
Content:
In Dresscode fashion was interpreted as an instrument of communication, an artistic code. The group show investigated how vestimentary representation is used as vehicle in artistic terms. The signals emitted by fashion are classed as symbols. Roland Barthes referred to them as codes vestimentaire––dress codes. Whereas fashion is arbitrary in the sense that its referential relationships are open-ended, artists in this exhibition operate with symbols relating to specific subjects. Dresses turn into codes on behalf of artistic concepts.
